An old trading town in a green valley
Shaxi lies in southwestern Jianchuan, between Dali and Lijiang, with Shibaoshan nearby. Once a prosperous stop on the Tea Horse Road, it preserves traces of its trading past in stone bridges, old paths and village streets. Green hills and farmland frame the valley.
Themes, seasons and suggested stay
Allow one or two days for unhurried walks, photography and Bai architecture. Explore the old lanes and bridges, then leave time for a meal and a slower look at local life. Spring and autumn suit a trip combining Shaxi with Dali and Lijiang; pack layers for the plateau’s changing temperatures.
