Dali and Shuanglang: three itinerary ideas
Three ways to explore Dali and Erhai: a two-day visit from Lijiang, three relaxed lakeside days or a six-day journey through Shuanglang and Xizhou.
Dali’s lake and villages, Lijiang’s waterways and the higher country around Shangri-La. Choose a journey with time between places.

For a first journey, Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La form a useful northwest sequence. They offer different days: an urban arrival, the Cangshan–Erhai landscape, Naxi towns and a higher Tibetan cultural setting. Xishuangbanna in the south and the western borderlands are separate travel choices. A province map is an invitation to choose, not an itinerary to complete.
Eight days can introduce the northwest with two-night stays in Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La after arriving in Kunming. This is an editorial outline, not a minimum stay for everyone. Add days for Lugu Lake, a mountain excursion or a slower pace. Compare the actual arrival and departure gateways before deciding to return along the same route.
Around Dali, look for Bai villages, rice-based snacks and rushan, 乳扇, a dairy food. Around Lijiang, leave time for Baisha and Shuhe as well as Dayan. In Shangri-La, monastery and town visits need their own cultural context. Ask a host or guide about ingredients, workshop access and photography rather than treating every village as the same performance.
Use the railway’s live timetable for the northwest towns, then plan the journey from each station to the exact accommodation. Dali station is not at Dali Old Town; Lijiang’s pedestrian lanes may need a separate luggage meeting point. Lugu Lake adds a road journey. Keep Chinese place names and booking details available offline.
