Chengdu, one teahouse at a time
A relaxed city day around People’s Park, neighbourhood food and the Kuanzhai area.

Chengdu is a useful starting point for city life and onward travel. Northern Sichuan brings a different journey: Jiuzhaigou’s lakes and the mountain landscapes of Aba. Distances on a map can hide a long road transfer. Choose fewer bases and leave space between travel days.
City weather and mountain weather are different. A pleasant day in Chengdu does not predict conditions at altitude. Check the forecast for each overnight stop and the access notices for each scenic area. For a first trip, combine city days with one mountain region rather than trying to see the whole province.
For a first visit, keep two or three days in Chengdu and choose one journey beyond the city. A northern route can link Jiuzhaigou with Huanglong; a western route can focus on the valleys of Siguniang. Niubeishan belongs to a different road journey towards Ya’an. Combining all three directions adds more transfers than most one-week trips need.
Dujiangyan suits an excursion from a city base: water engineering, riverside streets and a return to Chengdu. Jiuzhaigou rewards a full park day between two transfer days. Siguniang needs a choice between sightseeing valleys and more demanding outdoor plans. Niubeishan is primarily a viewpoint trip, with visibility and access shaping the experience.
Save hotel addresses and meeting points in Chinese, including the exact entrance or station. Check whether luggage can stay at your Chengdu accommodation during a mountain excursion. For a driver quotation, list overnight stops, passengers, suitcase sizes and the return destination. In restaurants, discuss ingredients as well as chilli level; hotpot, noodles and shared dishes need different ordering decisions.
