Overview
Dayan, Shuhe and Baisha are different visits
The World Heritage property includes Dayan, Shuhe and Baisha. Start with Dayan’s lanes and waterways, then make a separate outing to Shuhe or Baisha rather than racing through all three. Early walks and quieter side lanes offer a different atmosphere from the busiest evening streets. Keep a clear meeting point at the edge of pedestrian areas.
Follow the water and the local history
The waterways help explain how the town is organised. Add time for the Black Dragon Pool area if it fits your day, and compare a visit to Mufu with a slower neighbourhood walk. For Naxi history and the Baisha murals, a guide can provide context beyond a scenic photo. Check separate admission arrangements for specific museums and monuments.
Choose accommodation with luggage in mind
A courtyard inn in Dayan can place you close to evening walks, but cobbled or stepped lanes may require carrying bags. Shuhe and Baisha offer different surroundings and transfer needs. Ask for the vehicle drop-off point, distance to the room, heating and evening noise. Do not choose solely by the words “old town” in the listing.
Add one excursion at a time
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is a separately planned mountain day with its own access and reservations. Lugu Lake is a road journey better treated as an overnight side trip. Tiger Leaping Gorge also needs a clear choice between a sightseeing visit and a hiking plan. Keep two town days before deciding how much extra travel you want.
